Why We Care
The Flint River is more than just water — it’s part of our community, our recreation, and our way of life. Families, children, seniors, and local businesses all depend on a clean, healthy river for swimming, fishing, kayaking, observing religious traditions, and community gatherings. Protecting the Flint River means protecting our community.
Our Concern
A wastewater treatment plant has been proposed less than 500 feet from the Berryhill Estates and Riverwalk neighborhoods. If built, this facility could discharge 1.2 to 4 million gallons of treated wastewater into the Flint River every single day. Such a large increase could disrupt the delicate ecosystem, threaten wildlife like the endangered Eastern Hellbender salamander and Eagle nesting that diminishes the river’s value as a safe, vibrant place for recreation and family life. Businesses that use the river for boating, fishing, and camping will risk the loss of traffic due to customers desiring a cleaner environment to pursue their recreational goals.
What We Believe
We believe growth and infrastructure can and should be done responsibly. We call on Madison County and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) to seek a more suitable location for this facility — one that protects our neighborhoods, our businesses, and the natural beauty of the Flint River.
Our Pledge
By adding my name, I stand with my neighbors to say:
The Flint River is worth protecting.
Our community deserves thoughtful, responsible planning.
Together, we will safeguard the river for future generations.
